Sonic Solutions Interview | Roxio, Toast, Popcorn!–Dave Habiger

My interview with Sonic Solutions CEO Dave Habiger at Sonic headquarters in Santa Clara, California. Sonic is best-known as the company behind CD and DVD burning programs Roxio Creator and Toast. During our time together, I asked him if anyone had ever photographed him holding a burning match to a disc. After all, Sonic is the “burning” company.
To my utter shock, he said no, but was totally game when I asked if he would go for it.
The match, however, was puny–it hardly showed up–so we needed to graduate to burning coffee filters, with a bucket full of water below where Dave could toss the flames when his hand got too hot.
The picture session was brief, but memorable–I got what I had envisioned–and the video brings the session to life.
Oh yeah, the interview–Habiger talks about the changing face of digital media, and his predictions for the coming death of the disc.
